Black women, whose existence is precariously stretched inside of these constructions, have a particular interest in making the media’s role in the devaluation of Black life plain. While foremothers including Anna Julia Cooper, Ida B. Wells, and others had the limited resources of the printing press to educate wider publics about the precarity of Black life, modern activists have the exponential influence of digital media connected via social media, which allows them to create complex, multimedia counternarratives of Black lived experiences and circulate them alongside traditional texts.

Via Twitter’s technological tools and Black Twitter’s cultural and sociolinguistic ties, the women of Black Twitter have been uniquely situated to engage in a form of theorizing that acutely informs critical praxis in making our lived experiences, and the invisible influences of power that runs along the lines of race, gender, and class, visible and tangible to others in our communities and people outside of them. While our representation in mainstream news and entertainment media continues to lag, our formation of communities of practice and communities of thought on social media have amplified our voices and our influence on how the world sees us in ways our foremothers could not have seen.

There is perhaps no greater example of the power of this phenomenon than the emergence of the largest racial justice movement in the digital age, brought to life via hashtags and headlines through the initial work of three Black women—Black Lives Matter.
